LIBRARY NEWS

The El Camino Library is a busy place. Each class visits the library on a weekly basis. Mrs. Kristina DeHeras reads award-winning and seasonal books to the classes in addition to working on library skills with the students. Each year she reads the books that received the Caldecott award. For the 4th, 5th and 6th grade classes, Mrs. DeHeras reads one of the books that is up for the California Young Reader Medal. Once students have read the three books in each category, they will vote on the one they liked the best. Mrs. DeHeras will begin reading the Primary California Young Reader book selection to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd grades in February. These classes will then vote on the book they liked best in March.

The library is open during morning recess and at lunch for students to drop in for quiet reading, book return and checkout. During this time, the students may use the two iMacs to participate in the Accelerated Reader Program.

Mrs. DeHeras enjoys taking El Camino students to the Author-Go-Around and Battle of the Books. Both of these programs are sponsored through the Santa Barbara County Education Office and open to upper grade students. Mrs. DeHeras also enjoys recognizing the El Camino students who read over the summer. In partnership with the PTA, she recognizes students who hand in summer reading logs and rewards readers with a new book, bookmarks, and a lunch for the top readers in each grade during a school-wide assembly in September.
